We are getting very excited at the prospect of being the Volunteer Hub for the Championships.
Preparations include UCI starting to use our spaces for the training of their volunteers who are apparently very enthusiastic about their job. At a training session recently, which started at 1pm, many had started to gather by 11.30am! The training is certainly very thorough, much of it carried out by West Yorkshire Police, so the crowds in Harrogate should be well looked after.
We will have around 350 volunteers a day at Wesley. They will be able to collect a freshly prepared packed lunch from our kitchen and have all their Championship ‘kit’ available in the Lower Hall. The Upper Hall will be used as a rest and refreshment space. The Volunteers are being sponsored by Yorkshire Tea, so they won’t be short of a cuppa or two. We are hoping to have a Chaplaincy service available at Wesley throughout the Championships and a special Cyclists’ Service will also be held conducted by our Chair of District, Rev Leslie Newton. We hope that every volunteer will enjoy being with us and that they go away after the Championships with good memories of the Wesley Centre welcome they will have received.
